It sounds like a whole lot of high school teachers are igning "Franny and Zooey" to students too young to really understand it. I read it for the first time as a high school junior, and have read it at least twice a year since then (I'm now a junior in college). Every year I understand more. There are references and themes that I'm only now starting to pick up (I've learned all about the influences of Freud and the 1950's collegiate culture, but I'm kinda behind on my Buddhism and Diamond Sutras). It deals with much headier stuff than "Catcher," although I'd never judge one book as "better" or more profound than the other.
It's sad to me that so many of these students are having so much trouble coming up with writing ideas. uming they have all actually read the book, shouldn't the teacher be leading cl discussions or introducing ideas that might spawn...I dunno... independent thought?
Well, in the immortal words of Franny's favourite, ol' Epictetus: "What makes children? Ignorance." Study up, little darlin's. Do it for the fat lady... actually, do it for yourselves. This is more than a book, here. It's a revelation.
